Service Learning Celebration

The Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation recently held its annual Service Learning Celebration at the Pontchartrain Center. Mount Carmel Academy was awarded a check for $15,583.00 for grants submitted for the school year. We had already received a check for $8,115.00 for summer service learning programs. Mount Carmel received a total of $23,698.00 in grant money. Presidents and members from many of the clubs that received grant money attended the Celebration.

The theme of the celebration was "Get on board with Service Learning", and our girls did just that. Science Club members were asked to have a display and make a short presentation about the study of the food chain of animals in relation to their environment. Our MC CADD members (Mount Carmel Cubs against Destructive Decisions) also had a display focusing on their MCCADD on Wheels program. Ms. Favaro spoke to groups on the benefits of attending the National Service Learning Convention. Many schools visited the displays and asked questions about beginning their own service learning ventures, and many others invited us to their school to do a presentation.

The girls spent the morning visiting the SERVICE LEARNING EXPO which included over 80 booths designed for schools to meet service partners and learn new service ideas. Throughout the program, the emphasis was placed on how important Reflections are after a project is complete. It is vital for the students to realize what a difference they have made in others lives and in their own through service learning programs.

The girls felt energized when they received the check, which will now enable their club to be involved in the community. Reaching out to more organizations and expanding our community involvement is the goal for us this year.
