As Senior Katie Delay knelt before the statue of the Virgin Mary at the May Crowning ceremony in the Mount Carmel Academy Assembly Center, the Class of 2009 processed toward the bleachers for their final school assembly.

"Mary's faith allowed her to say 'yes' to God's will, and it changed her life," said Angela Elliott, senior class moderator, in an introductory speech at the event. "All who met her came close to Christ, and she models for us a courageous openness to God in all the events of our lives."

Ten other members of the Class of 2009 stood on either side of the Virgin Mary to create a canopy of pink roses as Delay placed a crown of flowers on Mary's head. In the background, the choir led the school in "Bring Flowers of the Fairest."

"What an amazing role model Mary is for all of us, but especially for our Pink Panthers. As the Class of 2009, it is time for them to step out in faith and courage to see where God will lead them."

The celebration continued as Father Patrick Williams, chaplain of Mount Carmel, celebrated Mass with the faculty and students. During the second reading, the four class mascots acted out the themes from Corinthians 12:12-26, which centered on the ideas of unity and togetherness. At the end of the production, Sister Camille Anne Campbell, O'Carm. crowned the senior Pink Panther mascot with a white graduation cap.

"This skit is a very powerful thing because we are the Body of Christ," said Sister Camille Anne.
