CSI Mount Carmel

This year's Biology II Honors classes were fortunate to have had Dr. Paula Gregory, Associate Professor of Genetics at LSU Health Science Center, as a guest in their lab.  After performing bacterial transformation in which students successfully inserted a bioluminescent gene into bacterial cells, students were given the opportunity to participate in a DNA crime scene identification lab.  Students loaded DNA samples and performed electrophoresis to create DNA fingerprints.

Dr. Gregory also spoke with students about the use of DNA evidence in forensics as well as the FIND FAMILY project used to help identify individuals who died in Katrina.  Students were excited to learn about the important genetics research happening right here in their hometown.
