Dear Parents and Students:

Our Guidance Department has eight full-time counselors and a guidance secretary, Libby Holmes, to assist you this year. We are located on the third floor in the library. In addition, Betsy Stangel works collaboratively with the Guidance Department as the College/Scholarship coordinator. Her office is located on the second floor in the IMC next to the college resource center. Earl Mylie and Gay Ford will also provide a support function to the counselors.

The Guidance Department publishes an updated grade-level handbook each year. These Guidance Handbooks address grade specific issues. Seniors and Juniors received their handbooks last Spring. All other grade levels will receive their handbooks this month.

In addition, Mount Carmel implemented the Edline program last year. It is essential for parents and students to activate and check their separate accounts often. We use this program to communicate grades, homework assignments, and important messages not displayed on our Web site.

We hope that you were able to attend Progress Report Conferences on September 18th. If your daughter is struggling with a subject, it is essential to obtain help now. Please encourage your daughter to visit our tutoring labs, which are open Monday through Friday during Independent Study. Also, a list of outside tutors is available from your Guidance counselor.

As part of our comprehensive testing program, each grade level will take a standardized test on October 15th. Please make every effort to ensure that your daughter is in school on this very important day. This month, we have successfully registered every Junior for an ACT test date. Refer to your daughter’s grade-level Guidance Handbook for more information on our testing program.

There will be a meeting for senior parents on October 14, 2008 at 7:05 p.m. to go over the college admission process for all parents who need guidance concerning their daughter’s progress.   If you have any questions before this meeting, you may email Mrs. Stangel directly at bstangel@mcacubs.org

In an effort to support parents in their role as the primary educators of their children, Mount Carmel is once again sponsoring the Parent to Parent program. This program has reached over three million parents since its inception. It is a program by parents for parents. This semester, we will offer three sets of opportunities to participate in this worthwhile program: Monday evenings, Wednesday mornings, and Wednesday afternoons. Please see a detailed schedule on our Counseling Center link on the MCA Web site.

The Guidance Department is happy to help you with any questions you may have, any personal difficulty, or commonplace dilemmas. Our goal is to help our students grow and mature spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, and socially. If you need our assistance, please do not hesitate to call, email, or visit us. You will find our contact information below. Also, please check the MCA Web site frequently for Guidance Department informational letters. We look forward to working with you!

                                                                    God bless you,

                                                                    The Guidance Department
