At least partially due to the explosion in popularity of cross country at area middle schools, the Mount Carmel Invitational meet continued its impressive growth this year. More than 50 teams with nearly 1,300 runners descended on the old south golf course at City Park in New Orleans on Saturday, September 19 to test their skills under beautiful skies on a relatively dry courserelatively dry, that is, compared to the previous week's slopfest.

Overall, the day was a huge success. Coach Chris Kelley, along with assistants Ben Sines, Mary Erin Imwalle, Chris Williams, and Michelle Hymel, and a small army of volunteers, set up a state-of-the-art computerized scoring system, spun tunes on a makeshift jukebox, manned checkpoints along the course and served up refreshments at a well-stocked concession area, including a jambalaya that drew raves.
